The artist behind this portrait is best known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was born seven years before the invention of photography and eventually used the medium as another way to explore his fascination with the world of childhood. Ella Drury sits before the camera here. She and her two sisters were among Dodgson’s many child friends, whom he documented extensively in various poses and costumes. From behind the lens, Dodgson studied childhood’s emotional complexity. Ella’s gaze is intense, suggesting simultaneous innocence and worldliness.
Photography was invented in 1839 and immediately offered a radically more accurate and economical way to capture a person’s likeness than painting ever had. The Carte-de-visites, or calling card, format used here commercialized and popularized portrait photographs in the 1860s. Cheap and easy to reproduce and mount into albums, carte-de-visites launched a craze for collecting portraits of friends, family, and celebrities.

Aquí, la persona posando para la cámara es Ella Drury, quien igual que sus dos hermanas, formó parte del grupo de amigos que Dodgson documentó copiosamente en distintos disfraces y poses.
